Pruning Crabapple Trees

The subject for this spring's Arboretum pruning class will be crabapple trees. Overgrown watersprouts, unhealed pruning cuts and crossing branches are hidden most of the year by blossoms, leaves and fruit but, left to grow, they shorten the life of any tree.

Because of the beauty they provide the landscape all year, crabapples trees are one of the most popular trees planted in many neighborhoods. Un fortunately, they are often not pruned. With proper care, a large, older mature crabapple tree can become a landmark. I have seen older trees with incredibly large canopies of flowers and fruits, they were truly beautiful trees.

The crabapple pruning workshop will be held from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 14th. Participants will learn how to make curative pruning cuts, get information about good tools and get hands-on practice.

The class is free and open to the public, so forward the information about this class on to others. Preregistration is required.
